The strongest onboarding sequences describe outcomes rather than features, keep each step to a single decision, and make skipping obvious for people who already know what they want. Because the same component is reused across steps, onboarding is where inconsistent copy length shows up most visibly in a mockup.

These ranges are starting points drawn from common component widths, not rules. Measure against your own type scale and breakpoints before locking a constraint.
Accessibility considerations
- Give each onboarding step a heading and move focus to it on step change, so screen reader users are told where they are.
- Coach marks and tooltips must be dismissible by Escape and must not disappear while a pointer or focus rests on them.
- Do not gate progress on a timed animation; let people advance at their own pace.
- Make the skip control a real, focusable button with a clear label, not a low-contrast piece of text.
